I adore the work of Herzog although his films than documentaries which i find rather forced but i totally disagree with him regarding storyboarding. Its a must especially on a film set to not only give yourself a blueprint on how to make the film but also your cast and crew too. Now what i will add is that you should also be open to moments of inspiration of the moment to come up with a better shot or sequence.

Herzog doesn't storyboard cos he doesn't make those kinds of movies. Waititi might not do it because the marvel production train comes with visual effects artists and you can be absolutely sure they are using storyboards

One of the things I love about WKW's films that take place in Hong Kong, is the way that he isolates people in a city that is crowded and noisy, colorful and constantly in motion. He slows down images a lot (probably more slow motion shots in his work than anyone else's) and lets the characters tell their stories. This is necessary in a city such as Hong Kong because if you don't zoom in, you simply see the surface of things. There a over a million people here and it is easy to see them as a mass and not as individuals. WKW penetrates through the surface of the mass, while maintaining what's essential about it (mostly its rush of images, motion and sound), as if he were plucking out from the city, a story at random, just to make his point that there are a million stories there if one were to look and listen. The City is not only the backdrop but is what unites them all as their individual experiences are filtered through this unique place. From what I've learned about WKW's films, I would credit Wing Shya as the main source of the look of the films (even more than Chris Doyle - this becomes more apparent when you see Doyle's work with other directors). Wong Kar Wai's stories are almost always about lonely people trying to connect but they don't know how to articulate their needs to others. This profound ambivalence beautifully coincides with the visual vision of Shya where images are also animate, existing in a place and time where two types of time are always present, the past and its tenacious attempt to remain relevant, and the present, as it attempts to assert itself as its challenged by the ubiquity of the past. WKW is a master of montage and, probably more than any other filmmaker working now uses the medium of film to its fullest effect. The City, always a kind of character in his films, is too much to take in in the typical experience and so we are left with impressions, not simply "photographs" that capture only a moment in time, but rather a montage of images that are full of mystery because there is more to what we see than meets the eye. The same goes with the characters. We see their faces, their clothing, hear their voices, their words, but WKW and Shya attempt to show us something of an essence beyond those limiters, symbols and signifiers. I think this is why WKW is the closest filmmaker we've had to the early pioneers, mostly of silent film where the image, not the story or the dialogue, is supreme.

Sadly, film is doomed as new, affordable film cameras are not being made. Old cameras are wearing out and parts are increasingly unavailable or very expensive. As is said, the second you scan a film print it becomes digital, so unless you are planning to develop and print your own pics, it's not worth the bother and not really practical.

  • @MariahGem

As an animator, I'm giggling over here, because without storyboards, you have NO animation. 3D, 2D or stop motion, we'd have no idea what we were doing without the storyboards. But that's because animation is 100% planned. I totally get what they mean though, and it works amazing for them, especially in the situations they were doing it in (Werner doing a documentary and Taika working with kids) it's more useful to not be bound by storyboards. You just have to be quick on your feet and able to change and have the elbow room to do it. But me here, working to compile storyboards right now, am like, "I could never!" But I totally get what you mean, it's fascinating to see different approaches!

I like the way you deconstruct McGingley's way of work, but also if the pictures are constructed that doesn't mean that the feelings or the moment is fake. As photographer I think you can repite the situations for make a representation. Art is a fiction based on the real life.
